This event marks the opening of the National Infrastructure Laboratory, a £48M investment made possible by funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Department for Business, Energy and Industry Strategy (BEIS) and project partners. The new facilities include a 30m x 15m strong floor, geotechnical and materials laboratories and a 6m geotechnical centrifuge, representing a major addition to existing capabilities in railway infrastructure R&D. These new resources can be made available to third party users.
The Centre of Excellence in Infrastructure, led by the University of Southampton, hosts collaborative research and development by academic and industry partners. It links the primary railway infrastructure research centres, providing industry with one-stop access to leading facilities around the UK to accelerate improvements from research into practice.
