Ways to Engage

UK Rail Research and Innovation Network has been established to deliver a step change in collaboration between the rail industry, universities, small and medium-sized business (SMES), and infrastructure owners to deliver innovations. There are plans in place to grow the network, building on the strong foundation of the Centres of Excellence and their partners.

For Industry

  • Access to dedicated engagement events with suppliers and industry
  • Support from the UKRRIN coordination hub in 5 key areas (bridging services, link to industry plans, route to market, capability mapping, promotional activities

Joining UKRRIN: For Academics

Building on the academic Centres of Excellence we are keen to expand the network to highlight to industry the wide range of institutions in the UK that can support research and innovation development.

UKRRIN Centres of excellence

The selected Centre of Excellence address core rail needs and have been identified and supported by industry. For a new centre to receive similar support a strong case for investment will need to be built based on existing and growing capability and sources of income will need to be identified.

UKRRIN Partner

Supporting delivery in core areas. As the partners will be associated with an existing Centres of Excellence, expressions of interest for partners will have to be agreed with the relevant partner university.

UKRRIN Affiliates

An affiliate member offers cross cutting skills to the network as a whole. Themes of relevance to the wider network include, but are not limited to

  • Human Factors
  • Machine learning and natural language processing
  • Robotics
  • Transport economics
  • Virtual reality and gamification
  • People flow modelling
  • Customer management
  • Noise and vibration
  • Material technology
  • Energy systems – Power network and smart grid
  • Rail policy and strategy

Joining UKRRIN: For Industry

The network is keen to build new collaborations and strategic partner relationships, including the opportunity to work with the SME supply chain to engage with world class research partners and develop new partnerships across the industry. Through the Railway Industry Association and Rail Alliance a programme of engagement activity across wider industry and SMEs has been developed.


How can I access the facilities?

The universities that have been selected by industry based on their existing, and planned capabilities and facilities. The institutions have specific skills that are needed to deliver rail innovation covering core railway research topics.
